Indische Buurt (“Indies Neighbourhood”) is the most vibrant and ethnically diverse neighbourhood in Amsterdam East and one of the most interesting in the entire city.
Even on a hot Saturday afternoon (like the one when the photos below were taken) this part of the city does not lack the action. Unlike in the more touristic areas in Amsterdam, where action means crowds and noise, in the case of Indische Buurt this comes from the rhythm of life of the locals themselves.
Javastraat is the commercial street of the neighbourhood and the busiest part of it. Most of the shops belong to Turkish people who live here. Delicious produce can be purchased and I could not help but notice that this street smells absolutely delicious from the many bakeries and pastry shops along it.

Lovely photos! I live in Indische Buurt and I love smelling the freshly baked bread every morning on my way to work. I especially like the photos of the sunflowers, I keep meaning to take a picture of them but yours are better than anything I could take on my phone!
Thank you, Naomi! Good to hear you also like Indische Buurt! 🙂
I like Indische Buurt too, even if i live in Iasi, Romania. I have never visited Holland but i hope i will because the photos are very beautiful.Irina Sava

Hi. I\’ve just come across your blog. My husband and I are visiting Amsterdam next weekend and we\’re staying in Indiche Burrt. This is our first time to Amsterdam, can you recommend some fun things to do? Funky bars, restaurants and general things to do and see. Many thanks in advance. Katie xx
When in Indishe Buurt, you must go to Walter`s – The Walter Woodburry`s Bar and to Gallizia (just accross the street, on the Javastraat). Studio K (restaurant+bar+movie theatre) is also a good idea. […] Indische Buurt, Oosterparkbuurt, Oostpoort, Watergraafsmeer – one could say we’ve seen most of the East. Yet something was missing. A visit to the East would not be complete without a stop in the Eastern Docklands, where bohemian, houseboat living coexists with living in former warehouses or in modern houses built by some of the most respected Dutch architects.
