Indische Buurt (“Indies Neighbourhood”) is the most vibrant and ethnically diverse neighbourhood in Amsterdam East and one of the most interesting in the entire city.
Even on a hot Saturday afternoon (like the one when the photos below were taken) this part of the city does not lack the action. Unlike in the more touristic areas in Amsterdam, where action means crowds and noise, in the case of Indische Buurt this comes from the rhythm of life of the locals themselves.
Javastraat is the commercial street of the neighbourhood and the busiest part of it. Most of the shops belong to Turkish people who live here. Delicious produce can be purchased and I could not help but notice that this street smells absolutely delicious from the many bakeries and pastry shops along it.
