The moment you cross the Amstel, coming from the South and heading towards the East, the face of the city changes: wherever you look it`s strikingly green and spacious. Sarphatistraat is the main street and from both sides elegant houses are looking towards you.
This area in the Eastern part of the centre is known as Plantage and, besides apartment buildings, a lot of cultural institutions are to be found here: musea, universities, theatres, cinemas – to name a few. It is, among others, home to Kriterion – a student run cinema that I always enjoy going to.
There is indeed a lot to admire in Plantage and that`s exactly what Sarphati intended when he designed it: a place in Amsterdam to match the grandeur of the big boulevards in Paris and London as they were at the beginning of the 19th century.
